Few of us, if any didn’t jump out of our skins when we first saw Ryu, the Shinigami. According to rumours, it’s time to prepare for round 2.
What’s The News?
The anime tells the tale of Light Yagami, a high-school student who comes into possession of a mysterious notebook (the titular Death Note) which has the power to kill anyone whose name is written in it. As Light goes on a vigilante killing spree to rid the world of those he deems morally unworthy, he is corrupted by the Death Note’s power and enters a game of cat-and-mouse with the enigmatic L – a detective tasked with investigating the deaths of those Light has killed.
The original anime released in 2007. Since then, we haven’t seen any updates or confirmation about a season 2. It seems quite unlikely that it’ll ever be renewed simply because there is no content to cover. The show ended pretty conclusively(potential spoiler omitted) and there just isn’t anything in the manga to cover.
Why The Long Face?
The show may not have much backing content. But that hardly stopped Netflix deviating massively from the manga and creating the Death Note fans so loved. Anime fans don’t much appreciate deviation though, so Netflix would be taking a bold risk with this one. Yet, the desire to mine a gold mine despite the potential pitfalls remains high.
Numerous live-action movies exist. Their sequels and prequels cover most of the manga and go beyond in some cases. Meanwhile, fans will be pleased to hear that the final manga to be translated into English is coming very soon.
While we’re keen to see the return of the enigmatic “L” and the blatantly cruel Ryu, we would hardly want a botched series making re-runs just for the sake of fan service. Yet, one never knows with Netflix. Stay connected for upcoming updates.
