An untitled sequel to Shazam! is set for release on November 4, 2022. Shazam is a superhero film based on the DC character of the same name. It released on April 9, 2019. David F. Sandberg directed it from a screenplay by Henry Gayden. New Line Cinema produced it, and Warner Bros. Pictures distributed it. The plot follows a teenage boy who can transform into an adult superhero. He receives these superpowers from an ancient wizard Shazam who chooses him as his champion. Billy and his best friend Freddy Freeman must discover Billy’s new powers to stop the evil Dr Thaddeus Sivana and the Seven Deadly Sins.
The film became a box office success after grossing $366 million worldwide. It was critically acclaimed for Sandberg’s direction, performances delivered by the actors and its sense of humour.
Everything we know about Shazam 2: Plot, Cast, Trailer
Star Zachary Levi, who plays the character, is extremely keen on working in the sequel. He was quoted saying, “I think one of the coolest things about the movie Shazam! [is] it brought people joy,” he said. “It legitimately brought people joy. If that’s all I ever do in this world, I will be so grateful and so stoked.”
So what can we expect in Shazam 2?
Dr Thaddeus Sivana and the Seven Deadly Sins get defeated by Shazam and his superpowered family in the first film. In the mid-credits scene, we find Sivana in his cell. Here he meets Mister Mind, a significant supervillain in the comics. He is a highly intelligent caterpillar-like creature who owns his own Monster Society Of Evil of which Sivana is a frequent member.
“Oh what fun we’re going to have together. The seven realms are about to be ours,” he tells Sivana, potentially setting up the plot of the sequel. The “seven realms” refers to The Seven Magiclands which are connected to the Rock of Eternity in the comics. The sequel might revolve around the established Shazam family exploring these realms. But this does not rule out the possibility that the Seven Deadly Sins may return. Even though they are now in the Rock Of Eternity, Sivana seems pretty determined to get his hands on them.
Billy Batson has accepted his place in his foster family and takes help from buddy Superman to prevent the bullying his brother Freddy Freeman faces at school.
Well, let’s just admit it Shazam! will not be Shazam without Zachary Levi and Asher Angel as William ‘Billy’ Batson, so they’ll both reprise their roles.
Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña and Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley will come back as members of Billy’s foster family. They’ve all now got their superhero alter-egos too with their adult superhero versions played by Adam Brody (Freddy), Michelle Borth (Mary), Ross Butler (Eugene), DJ Cotrona (Pedro) and Meagan Good (Darla).
Mark Strong will most likely return as the villainous Dr Thaddeus Sivana. Still, we do not know if Djimon Hounsou will come back as The Wizard Shazam as he disintegrated after giving Billy his powers.
Another question that fans have is whether we can finally see Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam. Safran had earlier teased while talking to Digital Spy: “You could read it that way if you dug into it.”
But Zach Levi had denied these rumours.”I can say that as far as I know, Black Adam is not going to be in the second Shazam! because the idea is that they want to go and do a standalone Black Adam movie first.”
The trailer of the second film is not out yet.
Is Shazam! a Comedy film?
Critics have best described the first instalment of the film as ” a wisecracking good time, but the DC Comics movie plays by the rules and is more of a comedy than a superhero film.” It is not mainly a superhero movie. It is a comedy about a superhero. Formulaic but fun.
