Sputnik V is a vaccine developed by Russia. It is a viral vector vaccine for COVID-19 developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. Registered on 11 August 2020 by the Russian Ministry of Health as Gam-COVID-Vac .The V in its name however stands for the alphabet ‘v’ (for vaccine) , and not the Roman numeral . It is named after world’s first satellite launched by the Soviet Union . It is the first vaccine against Covid-19 virus. It was announced in August 11 2020 . It got approval from Government of India on 12 April 2021 . It arrived in India on 1 May 2021 and receive the regulatory clearance on 13 May 2021 . The efficacy is 91.6% .
