New PERTE for the agri-food sector

Posted on February 15, 2022 The Council of Ministers approved last Tuesday, February 8, the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) of the agri-food sector, a set of measures that benefit companies and freelancers in the agri-food sector and that generate synergies with clear objectives. The actions of this project will be based on the following strategic lines:

Promote the technological transformation of the entire sector
Delve into the supply of healthy, safe and healthy food
Improvement of the dimension and social cohesion of the agri-food sector.
Promote the development of a circular economy and reduce the environmental impact of the agri-food system

What impact will this PERTE have?
The agri-food sector contributes almost 10% to GDP and is made up, for the most part, by small and medium-sized enterprises. 96% of the more than 30,500 companies are SMEs. This PERTE will have an impact of 3,000 million euros in the national accounts, the creation of 16,000 jobs is expected and will have a public investment of about 1,000 million euros until 2023. It is expected to generate an initial impact on the economy of about 3,000 million euros, also estimating a net creation of up to 16,000 jobs. In addition to these impacts, PERTE will generate positive effects on the economy as a whole derived from the creation of new business models and opportunities, the new job opportunities generated by the actions linked to PERTE, as well as the savings generated in the productive fabric, domestic economies and public budgets.

What are the priority axes of action of the agri-food PERTE?
The distribution of these funds will be organized around three axes. Axis 1: Specific support package for the agri-food industry, which will have 400 million euros aimed at improving crop production processes and ensuring greater food traceability, something that will directly affect consumers. Axis 2: Specific measures to support the process of digital adaptation and that it extends to all the agents that are part of its value chain (farmers and ranchers and their cooperatives, small and medium-sized production, transformation and marketing companies) with an endowment financial of 454.35 million euros. In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food will promote the Agricultural Exploitation Information System (SIEX) that will allow “simplifying” the relationship between farmers and ranchers with the administration. Axis 3: Specific measures to support new lines of research (R+D+i) to achieve “a competitive agri-food sector in all links”. This Agrifood PERTE will reinforce the triple sustainability (economic, social and environmental) of the agrifood sector and of all the agents that are part of its value chain, increasing the safety and health of agrifood supplies and accelerating the decarbonization of the agricultural sector to minimize its climate impact.
