The ‘Race Against Hunger’, an educational and solidarity project for the comprehensive development of students

To raise awareness among students and involve them in building a fairer world, Action Against Hunger launches the 25th edition of the ‘Race Against Hunger’. The mechanics of this initiative is simple and allows promoting values and skills in a fun and healthy way. Likewise, the students discover that, with their commitment and effort, they can also contribute their grain of sand to eradicate child malnutrition. This project was born in France in 1997. Since then it has managed to mobilize more than 14,000 educational centers in twenty countries. Almost 3.5 million students have put on their shoes and have run to raise funds and help the people who need it most in the 50 countries in which the organization works.

How to implement it from your center?

In order to participate in ‘The Race Against Hunger’, schools must register, through this link, and specify in it the data of the activity: courses with which it will be carried out, number of participants, name of the coordinators… After this, the centers receive the materials for awareness and the race and get down to work. The project consists of three phases:

An awareness workshop in the classroom with videos and dynamics provided by Action Against Hunger, so that students know the reality that exists in other countries. Search for sponsorship. The students must echo what they have learned so that their environment is also involved and look for sponsors to promote the day of the solidarity race. Celebration of the race in the center. Each center will organize its own race or sports challenge in bubble groups, setting a specific day or week, during a physical education class or during non-school hours. The centers have the possibility of registering a crowdfunding challenge and spreading it among the entire educational community in order to reach as many people as possible.

Working the SDGs and soft skills

The 25th edition presents several novelties: it responds to the curricular objectives of each stage, integrates the SDGs, proposes a collaborative methodology and reinforces the development of soft skills. In addition, it provides ideas to work in greater depth on the content that is available in different languages. This course, the main country on which the students work is Ethiopia, the oldest in Africa and one of the most complex, with a child malnutrition rate of almost 40%. The materials provided by Action Against Hunger are adapted to different levels: the smallest work on nutrition and water, while the largest deal with inequality, gender or climate change. Due to its dual educational and solidarity aspects, the ‘Race Against Hunger’ can become a Learning and Service experience, since the NGO offers a methodological guide with various proposals for centers that are interested in working on this methodology in the classroom. .
