Not all heroes wear capes: Tom Cruise succeeds in a big way with ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

The wait was worth it. Due to the pandemic Paramount decided to delay the premiere of ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘ from June 2020 to May 2022. The studio was clear: I couldn’t say no to Tom Cruise. And the actor had it even clearer: This film was made for the cinema, and had to be seen in theaters. Actually, any movie starring him. The skin is not left (or the skin is played) for nothing. It has to show off, and show off. The sequel to ‘Top Gun’ has debuted with a collection of almost 250 million (always) dollars worldwide. Half in the United States and the other half in the international market, including the 2.1 million that it would have raised in Spain (and which in exchange is just under 2 million euros). To contextualize, a premiere similar to the one achieved by ‘The Batman’ last March. Not all heroes wear capes. In this way, the sequel to ‘Top Gun’ becomes commercially the best premiere in Tom Cruise’s more than 40-year career, doubling the 64 million that ‘War of the Worlds’ grossed in 2005. It surpasses ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’ as the best premiere during the always lucrative Memorial Day weekend, a holiday celebrated in the United States on the last Monday in May. As if that were not enough, the film has obtained an A+ CinemaScore, so its maintenance at least in the United States is expected to be as good as that of ‘All at once everywhere‘ (whose total through Sunday is nearly 57 million). The other important premiere of the week hasn’t gone bad either, ‘Bob’s Burgers the movie‘, which has raised some 12.6 million in three days, which will already be more than 15 in four days (counted on holiday Monday). A film that in Spain will most likely be released directly on Disney +; probably, with as treacherous and nocturnal as ‘Chip and Chop: The Rescue Guardians‘…
