Sam Taylor-Johnson to direct Amy Winehouse biopic ‘Back To Black’

With a legendary career despite her all-too-short life, Amy Winehouse’s story is something filmmakers have been trying to bring to the big screen for some time. The director Asif Kapadiaya made his little tribute in the form of a documentary of the turbulent and talented life of the artist, and now it is StudioCanal who has started the development of a film to be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (‘Fifty Shades of Grey’) and carried by title ‘Back To Black’, in reference to her second album published in 2006. As I say, it is not the first attempt to adapt the life of Winehouse, although these previous versions stumbled over and over again with the important musical rights of the singer. This time it seems that things will be different, since the new film has the support of Winehouse’s heirs. On the other hand, the support of the family raises questions about how deep they will delve into his life, although in films like ‘Rocketman’ (for example), the darker nuances of Elton John’s life were not shied away from despite his participation. Matt Greenhalgh has written the latest version of the script for this project based on the life of Amy Winehouse, who died in 2011 at the age of 27 after years of a battle with alcohol and drugs. Starting her career on the North London jazz circuit, Winehouse became an award-winning music superstar. In 2015 there was talk of a possible biopic of the artist that was going to be starred by Noomi Rapace, although it has not transpired if the actress could continue to be linked to the project or if, on the contrary, Taylor-Johnson would look for her own leading actress.
