Cathy Yan to Direct Live-Action Adaptation of Yasutaka Tsutsui’s ‘Paprika’

Cathy Yan (‘Birds of Prey’) will be in charge of directing the television adaptation of ‘Paprika’, the famous novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui originally published in 1993. In turn, Yan will also executive produce the future series with her partner Ash Sarohia, Masi Oka and Jason F. Brown. Amazon Studios and Hivemind will take care of this real image adaptation of this work that was already made into a film in 1997, in a no less famous animated film directed by Satoshi Kon, also responsible for ‘Perfect Blue’ (1997) or ‘ Millennium Actress’ (2001). The original work is set in the Tokyo Psychiatric Research Institute, where they develop a technology that allows them to enter the dreams of mental patients and modify them as a form of therapy. When a sinister and crazy plot to gain control of said Institute is uncovered, a fight begins that will have two very different scenarios, reality and dream. At the moment Deadline does not advance more details about this future series than that, Amazon intends to shoot sometime in 2023 with a view to its premiere in 2024.
