‘Cut!’ It’s the kind of remake that gives remakes a bad image, a concept that shouldn’t sound as bad in itself as it sounds because of movies (not necessarily North American) like this ‘Corten!’. Not because it’s technically a bad movie, but because it’s pretty much the same movie it covers. But in French instead of Japanese, since that doesn’t have to be a big difference if we see both dubbed into Spanish… In short, do you remember ‘One Cut of the Dead’? If so, if you have seen it, around here you have nothing to (re)see. If this is not the case and you are curious, here you will find a good substitute… to call it something. Michel Hazanavicius defines the most down-to-earth version of the term “remake” with this well-off “copy” that attempts to pass off all the inventiveness of a more authentic Japanese original as its own. Or simply, what I said, original. In this way it depends on whether or not we know the original, or even how far our prejudices can go to value this ‘Cut!’ in one way or another: A photocopy without its own pride, either in a happy color or a sad white and black, who lives without shame from the rents that others have left him. Because it is worth it can be worth, because it is worth it. But it is still a remake unable to stand on its own. Or worse, to justify its existence.
