Bryan Fuller and A24 prepare a television series on ‘Friday the 13th’

Peacock has announced that it has greenlit the production of ‘crystal lake’, a television series that will act as a kind of prequel and at the same time a remake (or reimagining) of the entire ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise and not just its first film. Bryan Fuller (‘Hannibal’, ‘American Gods’) will be the main creative person in charge of this project that will have the support in the production of A24. Fuller serves as writer and showrunner, with the screenwriter of the original 1980 film, Victor Miller, as one of his executive producers. In Fuller’s own words to Fangoria, “we can use everything. We can go to hell, we can go to space… That doesn’t mean we’re going to do all these things… although if we get to ten seasons, there’s a lot of pressure to go to space (laughs). A24 and Marc Toberoff, Victor Miller’s attorney, have put together all the ‘Friday the 13th’ rights in a terrifyingly beautiful way.” “As a streaming series,” Fuller continues, “we have the rights to play everything under the ‘Friday the 13th’ umbrella. Theatrical rights are a whole different thing. They’re tied to New Line and they’re super, super. messy and probably won’t be unraveled anytime soon, but as far as us TV guys go, we have access to everything that’s been made from ‘Friday the 13th’ to date.” Fuller, who defines the project as a “pre-remake-quel” (pre-remake-uel), has assured that the intention is to make a series “with its own style”, this being in fact one of the reasons why the project ended up at Peacock: “Yeah, it’s one of the many reasons we went with Peacock, they beat all the other competitors. There was a bidding war, and they came in strong and gave us a full season commitment with a great deal of money.” penalty if we don’t do a second season. So it’s kind of a two-season commitment (laughs).” “But it’s really just the first season commitment. They’re going to give us about five times the budget per episode that we had on ‘Hannibal,'” he concludes.
