'Wicked', the long-awaited musical starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, hits theaters this weekend amid a barrage of praise from critics. Currently the film has an impressive 91% positive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes after 162 reviews, while on Metacritic it has a 72 out of 100 after 49 reviews. Being the adaptation of a renowned musical, 'Wicked' had the great responsibility of doing it well, which it seems to have achieved after numerous critics confirm that the film has done justice to the original material, mainly thanks to its impressive narrative, its performances and their visual effects. Thus, Jonathan Sim of ComingSoon describes the film as “a must-see cinematic event. Wicked is a spectacular film that is sure to make any musical lover happy. It adds a lot to the theatrical production, fleshes out the characters and makes you laugh and cry “. For her part, Helen O'Hara, of Empire Magazine, highlights its director and its protagonists: “Chu increases the color and the spectacle to extraordinary, almost overwhelming heights, but the real magic comes from Erivo and Grande as the friends/enemies in the heart of the story.” As a final review we are left with Sara Michelle Fetters of MovieFreak: “As much as I would have liked the filmmaking team to have refrained from breaking the story into pieces and delivered a three-hour musical adventure, Wicked won me over. “There is magic here, elements that defy conventional cinematic gravity, and I'm not going to let my reservations get me down.” Directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians') from a script by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, the film's cast is completed by Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum among others. It is estimated that the film could gross a whopping $100 million during its release this weekend in the US.
