The legend who’s legacy can’t be tainted by anyone, the one who carries the nickname “The Crocodile Hunter” is none other than Stephen Robert Irwin or more popularly known as Steve Irwin. Sharing the same birthday as his mother Lyn, Steve was born in the Irwin family to Bob Irwin on February 22, 1962. Irwin once described his father as a wildlife expert interested in Herpetology and his mother who was a wildlife rehabilitator. After moving to Queensland in the year 1970, the duo of wildlife expert and rehabilitator started the small Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park, which marked the starting point of Irwin’s almost unconditional affinity to crocodiles and many other reptiles. After being taught about the daily management and activities carried around the Park the young Steve began to help out in the Park as often as he could. As the young Steve was guided under the careful supervision of his father he wrestled his first crocodile at the tender age of nine. He also worked as a volunteer for the Queensland’s East Coast Crocodile Management program and achieved an incredible feat of capturing more than 100 crocodiles, some of which were relocated and a few were brought and housed in the family run park. After Steve took the mantle of managing the park from his father in the year 1991, he renamed the Park to Australia Zoo in the year 1998.

How Did Steve Irwin Die?

Ocean’s Deadliest one of the nature documentaries hosted by Philippe Cousteau Jr. and Steve Irwin was, unfortunately, the last nature documentary hosted by Irwin as he died during the production of the show. Irwin died on September 4, 2006, as he decided to go snorkeling in shallow waters to get some good shots for his daughter’s show, Bindi The Jungle Girl which was also going under production at that time. While snorkeling under chest-deep waters Irwin found a stingray and intended to capture a shot of the stingray moving away. But it didn’t go as planned and Irwin was stabbed by the stingray barb, which was considered as a defensive maneuver undertaken by the stingray as it felt boxed by the hovering boats above sea level.

Though Irwin first believed that only his lungs were punctured in this accident, but the stingray’s barb pierced Irwin’s heart which caused him to bleed to death. As soon as this unfortunate event occurred Irwin’s crew members registered CPR and rushed him to the nearby Low Isles where the medical staff declared the unfortunate and sorrowful announcement of Irwin’s death. Though these moments were recorded on tape, it wasn’t included in the documentary. But the footage of the incident was viewed by Queensland State Police to include a report in their investigations. As a request from Irwin’s family all the copies of the footage were destroyed.
