TVING’s “Rose Mansion” Under Fire for Animal Abuse

The production team of the tvN drama, «Rose Mansion“, apologized for the accusations that a cat was abused during the filming, the scenes appear in what for me is episode 2, but for Korea it is 4. The drama has been under fire since rights defenders of the Animals of Korea (KARA) raised questions about animal abuse, addressing the scene from the fourth episode of the series that aired on May 13, where a man stabs and kills a stray cat. “The cat appears several times in the scene and it is unclear which one was shot with the real cat and which one was CGI (computer generated imagery),” KARA wrote on Instagram on Wednesday. “Animal abuse crimes are becoming more cruel and many cats are killed in real life… it is unnecessarily sensational to show an abuse scene in detail in a drama,” the association said. Regarding the dispute, the production team apologized but denied any actual abuse during filming.
“There was no abuse during filming. Due to technical limitations like CGI, we used a real life cat that was trained for the scene. An animal expert took steps to keep the cat safe. However, we apologize for causing so much trouble and making viewers uncomfortable,” tvN said in a statement posted on Instagram the same day. “We have decided to remove the problematic scene from the episode and reupload the episode to the streaming service. We will also comply with new government guidelines on animal safety and safeguard animal rights in the future,” the production team added. In Korea, the drama airs on tvN and TVING.

In fact, in the scenes that I saw, it is only hinted that the small animal is injured and tortured, bleeding to death in the process… But even so, perhaps they could have avoided this, because in fact, cats are often used even in “sacrifices” , there is no need to bring it to the screens…!! Both the writer and the director work mainly in the cinema where there is greater freedom of expression of their ideas, but someone forgot that “Rose Mansion” would be shown on television (by cable or internet, but television at last). Just last January, the Korea Broadcasting System apologized after a horse that was being goaded into a run fell hard as its hind legs were tied with a rope causing it to fall, injuring its head and neck, during the filming of the historical drama «The King Of Tears, Lee Bang-won”. The injured horse died about a week later. Credits The Korea Times
