Equities start the week with big falls on both sides of the Atlantic

Posted on September 27, 2022 Enormous correction of the European stock markets, which recorded sharp falls at the end of the week to reach lows for the year, with a drop of 2.29% in the Euro Stoxx 50 and 2.46% in the Ibex 35. With these declines, the Euro Stoxx 50 is below its year low and falls 22% in the year. The Ibex 35, with a better relative, still corrects, however, 13% in 2022, after falling 5% in the week. These falls are marked by the strong rise in long-term bond yields, the greater fear of recession with the latest known data and inflation that remains very high. With regard to sectoral movements, Friday’s session showed a sharp drop in energy, a drop in the price of crude oil, raw materials and cars, compared to a better relative performance (although negative) in the food or health sectors. In the year as a whole, the real estate sector has become the sector with the worst performance, after its strong correction in recent weeks (-43%), along with retail (-42%) or technology (-35%). In contrast, only one sector, energy, remains positive (+9%) in the year, followed by food or insurance, with smaller relative falls. At the level of values, within the Spanish selective, the fall of Repsol, Grifols, and Meliá or IAG in travel stood out. On the other hand, better performance of Fluidra, the only positive value, Siemens Gamesa, Telefónica, or Mapfre. In the Euro Stoxx 50, good performance by Airbus, after its strategic presentation on Friday, along with Sanofi, Essilor, Flutter or Air Liquide. On the other hand, the punished real estate sector, the banks (ING, Intesa), the oil companies Total and ENI, or Volkswagen in cars, were left behind. The US stock market was infected by this negative behavior and already opened lower, to end up also closing with sharp falls. The session closed with a drop of 1.72% for the S&P 500, which is already correcting 22% in the global figure for 2022. The Nasdaq corrected in a similar way and is down 30% in 2022.
