The DC universe expands at the hands of Henry Cavill, James Gunn and Matt Reeves

In an extensive article dedicated to the DC Extended Universe (better known as the DCEU), The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed some of Warner Bros. Discovery’s future plans for the franchise. As has been rumored for months, the most important of them is the return of Henry Cavill as Superman. The studio, led by producer Charles Roven, will already be looking for writers to develop what will essentially be ‘Man of Steel 2‘. THR mentions Christopher McQuarrie as the dream option for those responsible for him, although it seems difficult for the filmmaker to be part of the game due to his commitments to the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise. The project has become one of the priorities for the company’s new managers (David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, and Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, presidents of Warner Bros. Film Group), and everything indicates that it will be It’s about a matter of time. In fact, it is possible that we will not have to wait long to be able to see Cavill again in the skin of Clark Kent, a character whose cinematographic future could also be closely linked to that of ‘Black Adam‘, as Dwayne Johnson himself has hinted in various interviews. Although it would not have to, it is possible that the resurrection of what would be ‘Man of Steel 2‘ suppose the cancellation of the alternative project on Superman in which Ta-Nehisi Coates has been working for more than a year with the support as producers of JJ Abrams and Hannah Minghella. In said article THR also confirms “another” open secret: That Warner Bros. wants to continue working with James Gunn after the successes of ‘The Suicide Squad’ and ‘The Peacemaker’. The study is already trying to finalize the next project of the filmmaker, who in any case has to finish the post-production of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ and take charge of the second season of the aforementioned ‘The Peacemaker’. It would be a film project in principle, which would not have to have anything to do with ‘The Suicide Squad’ and could consist of more than one film. It all depends on the DC character and/or characters Gunn shows interest in. Warner Bros.’s intention is to give Gunn the same freedom he has given Matt Reeves to expand on what he introduced in early 2022 with ‘batman‘. At the moment the only project on track is that of the HBO Max series about the Penguin played by Colin Farrell, which will be shot in early 2023. Although there is no predefined plan, Reeves has begun to meet with different writers and directors to assess different proposals and options. The intention, as with Gunn, is that it be the creative process that guides the commitment to one or another project, both film and television. Reeves will oversee the development of this fledgling universe while also working on the script for the sequel to the aforementioned ‘batman‘. Speaking of sequels, mention that in said article it is also mentioned that Patty Jenkins will deliver this month the latest version of the script for ‘Wonder Woman 3’just as David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (screenwriter of ‘Aquaman’) has written the script for a hypothetical sequel to ‘Flash‘. Just in case the movie is a hit and Ezra Miller doesn’t get thrown in jail…’Flash‘ is one of four DC movies to be released in 2023, with ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’, ‘Blue Beetle’ and ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ the other three. Already in 2024 it will be the turn of ‘Joker: Folie deux’, which today is the last movie inspired by a DC character with a release date. From there… I’ll see. Do you want to know more?
