The war in Ukraine has shown us how important it is not only to use modern weapons, but also to efficiently treat soldiers wounded on the battlefield. However, this is not an easy task, as it is difficult for medics to act in a life-threatening situation. And not only from enemy missiles, but also from infectious agents and contamination. Not to mention the fact that they are not as many as needed and have limited resources. In addition, if a patient requires further care, it may take hours or days to be transferred to a safe location with adequate resources. But British scientists at the University of Sheffield are working on technology that could change that. Researchers are developing a special telepresence system for the treatment of military personnel in combat. The plan assumes the use of robots, controlled by doctors located far from the battlefield. The machine would collect data on the patient’s vital signs using the same technology used in robotic surgery. Robots could measure blood pressure and temperature, take oral swabs and blood samples. Whereas a medic equipped with a VR set would remotely assess the patient’s conditionand then decided on the steps to be taken to save his life. The project is currently at the research stage, so it is difficult to say when such technological innovations could be put into use.
