LG UltraGear is the brand's 1st gaming notebook with 300 Hz screen and RTX 3080

Days before CES 2022, LG announced one of its highlights at the fair — the LG UltraGear 17G90Q, the South Korean giant's first gaming notebook. With a minimalist design, but with elements common to gamer laptops, the novelty draws attention to the powerful specifications, the high speed screen and the reasonably low thickness considering the processing power.

LG UltraGear 17G90Q is the brand's 1st gaming notebook

LG's first gaming notebook will be powered by Intel's 11th generation Tiger Lake-H processors , along with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 "Max-Q" GPU. The company does not specify the CPU models that will be included in the novelty, but considering the machine's proposal and the "Max-Q" version of the graphics chip, there is a possibility that the company has chosen solutions from the H35 family , which offer thicker versions of Intel's ultrabook chips.

Also noteworthy is the use of the term Max-Q to represent the power of the RTX 3080 . Nvidia stopped using the term to indicate the level of consumption of GPUs, and started to use it for a suite of technologies, thus forcing manufacturers to specify how many Watts the graphics chip can consume in the notebook.

LG is expected to announce these details during CES, including even VRAM capability, but given the presence of the "Max-Q", the component is likely to operate between 80 W and 115 W, well beyond the limit of 150 W, which should impact performance.

The good news is that a steam chamber is used for cooling, accelerating the chips' heat dissipation. There's also 16GB or 32GB of DDR4 RAM, up to 1TB of storage with the possibility of expansion via two M.2 slots and generous 93 Wh battery, despite the thickness of 21.4 mm and the weight of 2.64 kg .

The display is another highlight of the UltraGear 17G90Q: the notebook comes with a 17.3-inch Full HD IPS LCD panel, with a 300 Hz refresh rate, 1 ms (GtG) response time and 99% range coverage sRGB colors. Audio complements the experience, offering stereo sound and DTS:X Ultra technology, which promises greater immersion.

In connectivity, the notebook employs Wi-Fi 6E with Intel Killer network card, USB-C 4 port with Power Delivery and Thunderbolt 4, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 with DisplayPort, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports, P2 connector for headphones and microphone, HDMI, ethernet port and MicroSD card reader.

Other than that, the gaming laptop from LG offers per-key RGB backlit keyboard, digital reader on the power button, webcam with infrared sensor and UltraGear Studio software, through which users will be able to control multiple aspects of the machine, including fan speeds, memory settings and more.

Price and availability

The LG UltraGear 17G90Q arrives first in the US, to then debut in other markets, but the price has not yet been announced, nor to which countries LG will take the device. The company reveals that more information will be released during its conference at CES 2022, on January 4, at 1:00 pm GMT.
