Damon chooses himself for death. Bonnie rescues Damon and battles, Cade. Stefan finally kills Cade by using a dagger. At last, Damon and Stefan reunite, thus concluding Season 8.

If the teen heartthrob series were to return, it would likely have 22 episodes. However, Ian Somerhalder (Damon), Nina Dobrev (Elena), and Paul Wesley (Stefan) declined to return as their characters. Without the actors, renewing the show may not be successful.
Once the actors are ready to take on their roles again, Vampire Diaries Season 9 will pop up in no time.
Rumors are spreading around on Vampire Diaries 9 that is giving fans false hopes. One such rumor claims the new season will release in March 2021. There is no confirmation on this rumor in any news source, however.
