I did not rest until I found and watched all 16 episodes of «tracer» from MBC, a revenge drama set in the Seoul South Regional Office Tax Division. I found it with better Spanish subs, although still not exact, on the Mundo Doramas blog with Spoilers. The problem is that, although it is a very well written story, the technical and legal research work is noticeable, there are many dialogues with specific terminology, it is not that they spend their time naming articles and laws, but they do talk about procedures and issues related to finance, economics, legal and tax plots. So it is indeed a drama that is not for everyone. Romance?? Barely hinted at in the characters of Im Si Wan Y Go Ah Sung, until the end of the 16 episodes. In terms of ratings, it did quite well in Korea, although due to the broadcast of the Olympic Games in Japan, it was cut into 2 seasons of 8 episodes each. In the first season it started with 7.4%, dropped to 6% in episode 2 and ended with 7.6% in episode 8. While in the second season it started with 5%, dropped to 4.1% in episode 6 and ended with 9% in chapter 8. It was also in the top 10 of the Good Data popularity list. in several weeks. And it is that the theme, the narrative with several twists and turns and that the one who believed himself to be almighty evil, was left alone until he lost everything, excited the public. Also, the protagonist is not a hero, but an anti-hero, without an aura of goodness and perfection, but he is a pretty normal guy, only he does the right thing instead of chasing success like others do. It could be a very local story, but at the same time not. Because beans are cooked everywhere if we talk about rich, corruption and taxes!!

Synopsis: Hwang Dong Joo is the head of Team 5 of inspectors belonging to the Southern Regional Office of the National Tax Service. He works hard to track down money that is hidden from the IRS, however, he entered this office with a personal goal that will lead him to uncover a painful truth. His team includes Seo Hye Young, who has a bright personality, although she holds great pain in her heart. The team’s manager is Oh Young, someone who had been stuck as a team manager for 17 years because he didn’t submit to his superiors’ game years ago; he achieves a promotion thanks to the work of Hwang Dong Joo, but he is still under the orders of superiors who surrender to corruption, however team 5, becomes the strength and drive of him to do the right thing. Meanwhile, In Tae Joon is the deputy director of the southern regional tax office. He wishes to obtain the position of Director of the southern regional office, as a first step towards the Ministry of Finance, relying on large corruption schemes that include banks, large corporations and, of course, he uses all his subordinates who “owe” him their advances and permanence in positions where they have enriched themselves by “forgiving” what should not be forgiven. In Tae Joon is ambitious, but he maintains an image of neatness and honesty to the public. However, that tower full of “favor debtors” that he has built is his Achilles heel. In all the countries of the world, rich people, in most cases, commit illegal acts in order not to pay the taxes to which they are obliged. In Korea, one of the biggest social problems is the corruption that generates huge inequalities in justice, education, housing, health, etc. and allows the rich and powerful to stay where they are. Hwang Dong Joo arrives at the National Tax Service with the aim of discovering the truth behind the death of his father, with whom he did not have a good relationship. But at the man’s death, he regrets not having listened to him. He leaves a well-paid job as an accountant in a “good” company to enter the National Tax Service, and there, when he begins to “move” the matters that correspond to him, he discovers the hidden dealings that have allowed small (compared to big businessmen), criminals hide their wealth from the treasury, but he finds what is hidden almost in plain sight. Other crew chiefs don’t like that because he’s taking away the “customers” who paid big to protect him. But the final target of our antihero is none other than In Tae Joon, someone who said he was a friend of his father, but who is now surrounded by ambitious and corrupt men who fight to be on the good side of his boss. Hwang Dong Joo works hard and gets Oh Young promoted to manager, continuing to face the various tricks and attacks from other managers. This leaves In Tae Joon alone, but also brings out a painful truth about Hwang Dong Joo’s father. Our boy must accept that his father was just as corrupt as the enemies he now faces. It makes him regret dragging his team before the eyes of the rich and powerful who can harm them. There, another affected person turns out to be Seo Hye Young, she lost her entire family thanks to the corruption that was planned by Hwan Dong Joo’s father and that the tax office officials hid, to use her and of course In Tae Joon is one of the great beneficiaries. But just when In Tae Joon already sees himself in the chair of Chief of the South office of the National Tax Service, the dream of him falls, he knocks him down by confessing his biggest crime and trying to cover it up again. But now he is alone, there is no one to keep repeating his lies to make them true, and all those he used cannot ask him for more favors, his mask has fallen off and he has no power. I didn’t like the exact end of the character, he behaved like a coward, but those who were on the right side, keep going and are doing well, they know that they have done their duty and are no longer the team 5 of losers, who occupy the last office and are despised by others. As I said, there is hardly any romance hinted at and in fact the genre is not in the description of the story. But I repeat, you can see the good research work in the areas it touches: Accounting, finance, taxes, law, all of which are of interest to me. The narrative rhythm is attractive and captivating, it is a story where something happens every week and that is why it envelops you little by little, making you want to discover how Hwang Dong Joo will be able to fulfill the objective he set for himself. I repeat that you will like it if and only if the topics interest you, and of course, to see very good performances and a very solid team of actors. There are 16 episodes of action, thriller, mystery and drama, directed by the PD Lee Seung-young from “Voice 2» and the writer’s script Kim Hyung Jungauthor of «falsify» from 2017, another drama about the persecution of liars who take everything beyond what they can control, even causing the death of innocents, very good work of both creatives!!
