5 MUST-SEE Movies from Netflix India

Netflix has revolutionized the way we entertain ourselves. Gone are the days, when we had to stand-in line and go to cinemas for our entertainment needs. Today, we can watch our favorite movies without leaving the house.

In this COVID-19 Pandemic Era, Netflix has become one of the favorite pastimes of the people. People regularly watch movies as they have nothing better to do in their own free time.  Most of times, we exhaust our minds, trying to select what we want to watch. After all, it is after all difficult to choose one from so many titles that are offered to us.

So, here is my attempt to make this task of yours easier, with 5 movies that you must watch from Netflix India

5. Imitation Game

This historical drama film tells the story of a computer scientist Alan Turing, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and his role in helping British win the World War II by cracking Enigma. While World War II is often showcased as a war of brute and raw strength, this movie shifts in its direction, by showcasing it as a battle of intellect.  In order, to break Enigma, Alan Turing decides to build a machine which later helped in the prototype of our modern-day computer, much to the dismay and doubts of the rest of his team-mates.  Alan Turing became the unsung hero of World War 2, whose efforts were literally unknown, and became public knowledge a lot later.

In the background are his struggles of hiding his homosexuality and co-existing with his team. Cumberbatch is exceptional as restless and prideful, Alan Turing and so is Keira Knightley as female prodigy Joan Clarke. Charles Dance is also good in the role of the authoritarian head Commander Denniston.  The only reason why this movie is last on this list is because of the gross historical inaccuracies present in the movie.

4.  The Departed

The Departed is a 2006 Martin Scorsese crime film, a remake of 2002 Hong Kong movie Internal Affairs, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Jack Nicholson and others. The plot revolves around a cat and mouse game between the Massachusetts State Police and Irish Mob Boss Frank Costello played (Jack Nicholson_, both of them have a mole placed in each other’s closure with William Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) a mole in Irish Mob and Collin Sullivan (Matt Damon) a mole is MSP.

Featuring one of the best cast, this movie provides us with a gangster drama which can normally be expected from Scorsese film. The climatic twist of the movie is something you won’t see coming as it is exceptionally surprising. The movie is also greatly directed, with the name like Martin Scorsese attached, it does not need to be said.

3. Seven

A Serial Killer Story starring Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey and Gwyneth Paltrow, directed by David Fincher, it is one of the most impossible to stomach movies ever made.  The movie starts with the murder of a grotesquely fat man, later it is revealed to be a part of a killing spree. Each Killing represents The Seven Deadly Sins.

Featuring one of the best ensemble cast, each kill is filled with gore and creativity and the climax is something that will stick in your head for the rest of your life. Kevin Spacey gives us a haunting and chilling performance, and so does every other cast member. The descriptions of how the killing was done would make you retch in disgust.

This is indeed a horrifying movie.

2. Schindler’s List

A 1993 movie filmed entirely in black and white, one would be a fool to dismiss this movie by looking at the filter. Instead of making this movie boring, the black and white filter gives it a ‘documentary feeling’. This movie is famous for being one of the most accurate historical movies ever made and being one of the most gruesome depictions of holocaust.

The film is about Oskar Schindler, initially a war profiteer; he along with Itzhak Stern soon became hero for more than 1,000 Jews.  Boasting one of the best cinematography in cinematic history, this movie would make you tear and feel for the Jews that died during the Nazi reign. It does justice to 6 million Jews who were the victims of the Holocaust and a great man like Oskar Schindler as well.

1. Godfather

Godfather is often considered to be ‘The Greatest Film ever made’ and it is easy to see why. The movie has a rating of 9.2 out of 1,575,880 ratings and 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes in its CV, it greatly influenced Martin Scorsese, a man famous for his gangster flicks. An Adaptation of Mario Puzo’s novel of the same name, this 3-hour epic is the most perfect movie ever to be made. The plot centers around a gang war between Corleone mob family and Tattaglia crime family. Performances by Marlo Brando as Vito Corleone and Al Pacino as Michael Corleone have become legendry. Add to that a hauntingly beautiful score by Nino Rota, mainly the soundtrack ‘Speak Softly Love’. This movie has endless quotable lines including “I’ll make you an offer you can’t refuse”, “He’s sleeping with fishes” etc.

Francis Ford Coppola really hit the ball out of the park with this one. Awesome Screenplay, Great Performances, Beautiful Score, Excellent Screenplay, what more could you ask from a movie.
